Victoria Day Weekend at the Cottage

We spent much of our time watching for butterflies, birds and other animals. We watched this gorgeous blue jay fly from tree to tree…

…and this lovely butterfly fly from flower to flower:

We also saw a beaver but couldn’t get any good pictures of it. We had never seen a beaver on land before and were amazed at how big they are. We also heard it chewing part of the dock. 🙂
We watched the sunrise in the mornings:

We spotted this gorgeous lake on the way to Algonquin Park one day and just had to stop to get some pics:

We rented a canoe…

…and spent the day canoeing. We saw many animals, including several loons, two of which popped up right in front of us and this very interesting looking bird:

While taking a break close to shore, we spotted this little froggy…

…and this loon on land.

Ligeia and Mindy were so excited to try portaging for the first time. The hardest part was figuring out how to get it on our shoulders. But we asked some more experienced portagers and before you knew it we were portaging our way to the next lake…

Our canoeing adventure brought us to such sites as this:

Driving out of the park, we spotted this female moose by the side of the road:

And meters away we saw this male moose drinking some water and eating the plants at the bottom of this little pond:

Back at the cottage, we had an evening visitor:

On our last day, we awoke to find yet another adorable rabbit eating our lawn:

We are still VERY sore from canoeing and have several black fly and mosquito bites to prove we there, but it was all worth it. 🙂
We hope every made the most out of the 3 day weekend and for our US-American friends, not to worry, YOUR 3-day weekend is coming up! Happy Memorial Day!
