We were ecstatic to happen upon FoMu, which is located only a couple doors down from Root Vegan Restaurant in Allston, Massachusetts just outside Boston. Everything about FoMu, which is a play on faux moo, is 100% vegan, from the ice-cream to the cones to the toppings – even the gummy bears and sprinkles! We had a hard time deciding what to order, a problem that we welcomed whole-heartedly and, unfortunately, don’t come across often enough!
Atmosphere
To be honest, we were so excited about discovering vegan ice-cream that we didn’t even notice the atmosphere when we first entered and instead just made a beeline for the ice-cream counter where a friendly staff member met us with the same enthusiasm. It wasn’t until we had our cones in hand that we widened our vision a bit to take in the entirety of the establishment, which had a very parlor-like feel to it. It felt hearty and strong with earthy wood-tones and also had a touch of elegance with classy lighting and tasteful decor.
The Owners
Hin and Deena opened the FoMu in Allston just over three years ago in order to fill a very under-served market in the Boston area. They were particularly inspired by the awesomeness of the coconut. They have plans to open more locations in order to make their product more accessible. To that end, they also have an online store.
According to the owners, their signature fan favorite flavors are salted caramel, magic bars, peanut butter mud pie and chocolate brownie. They all sound delicious!
Menu
The menu consisted of a wide variety of coconut-based ice-cream with both traditional flavors like vanilla and strawberry to more unusual flavors such as avocado and cardamom pistachio, which was reminiscent of Indian food. There were several types of cone to choose from, including gluten-free, sugar-free and waffle as well as many toppings such as various pecans, sprinkles, gummy bears and cookie crumble!
After tasting several flavors we finally settled on the fresh mint chip and cookies and cream and Mindy’s mother ordered and enjoyed the peanut butter mud pie. We recommend all three flavors to the point that my mouth waters just thinking about them.
FoMu also serves an exciting array of unique ice-cream filled smoothies and frappes. We were too full from our ice-cream cones to try any, but we will be sure to do so next time as the combinations seem very intriguing.
Service and Prices
The service was impeccable! We were not only allowed, but welcomed, to try as many flavors as we wanted. Both employees we spoke with were very friendly and even made suggestions that we might enjoy. One of the staff members was vegan and she seemed to enjoy how excited we were about so many vegan options.
Honestly, we were ready to pay high prices since we rarely have such an opportunity to enjoy ice-cream (and in waffle cones to boot!), but we found them to be reasonable, especially considering the generous amount they give their customers.
We will most definitely visit FoMu the next time we find ourselves in Boston; in fact, we may even have to plan another trip there just for the ice-cream!
