Located on Charles Street in the heart of downtown Kitchener, Cafe Pyrus serves hearty North American vegetarian and vegan meals. It’s long opening hours of 8am to 7:30pm make it easy to stop in anytime for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Atmosphere
Cafe Pyrus has a large dining room with plenty of seating including the standard tables and chairs, as well as very comfortable plush sofas. We went for lunch on a weekday and became part of the relaxed working vibe, where patrons ate delicious vegetarian and vegan food while continuing to work or checking Facebook during a lunch break. Food is ordered cafeteria-style and was brought to your table by a friendly waiter.
Menu
The menu at Cafe Pyrus is written up on a big menu board that spans the entire length of the order counter and includes hearty dishes like burgers, sandwiches and soups. If you are in the mood for something lighter, a variety of salads and wraps are also available. Mindy tried the club sandwich with tempe bacon, Daiya cheese and avocado which came with a side of chips. I enjoyed the spinach salad with apples and walnuts. Both meals were delicious even though they were completely different. Mindy said her sandwich was one of the best club sandwiches she’s had.
Vegan
It was very easy to eat vegan at Cafe Pyrus. Most meals are vegan to begin with and the few that are not can easily be made vegan with the substitution of vegan Daiya cheese for cow cheese. As well, all dishes with honey were clearly marked.
Service and Prices
Our meal orders were met by smiling faces and only a short time later the food was hand-delivered to our table. The restaurant was kept clean and the tables were cleared very quickly after patrons left. The prices were very reasonable at around $10 a meal and are comparable to those in the area.
The next time we find ourselves in the Kitchener/Waterloo area we will definitely stop by Cafe Pyrus for a meal.
